Beginners’ Pattern Cutting Workshop

This is the last post of catching up with the great work that’s been produced by students at recent workshops!

beginnerspatterncutting-may15-webMy 4 students hard at work in concentration mode!

Last Sunday was the Beginner’s Pattern Cutting workshop –  this is a really valuable skill to learn and is usually the next step for keen dressmakers who have got bored or frustrated by readymade patterns.

Pattern cutting enables you to draft your own patterns to your measurements and design. It’s quite a technical, mathematical skill and I find that people either love it or hate it! I love it, as I like how logical and precise you have to be, but there also still feels like there’s a bit of “magic” involved.  It’s such a satisfying process to be able to take an idea from your head and turn it into an actual garment that fits your body perfectly.

beginnerspatterncutting-may15-2I think those faces say it all, don’t you?!

It’s always satisfying for me as a teacher at the end of a pattern cutting class, to see a group of students try on the toiles they’ve drafted, half-expecting them not to fit and then see their faces light up as they fit perfectly.  And, when something fits well it automatically looks good, is flattering and is really comfortable.

Here’s what those happy faces thought of their day:

“Really good day, practical, useful and mellow. Wendy is strict but funny which means you get things done and enjoy yourself.  And my skirt fits!!!  Thank you.  Lara

“Thank you. Very well structured and clearly laid out. An excellent workshop which leaves you wanting to do more! See you on the stretch workshop!” Harriet

“A thoroughly enjoyable and informative day and the skirt fits me! As an introduction to pattern cutting the day was great and I learned techniques applicable to all my sewing. Can’t wait to learn how to cut trousers to fit me!” Mary

“Thanks Wendy, this was a great way to spend a Sunday – learning how to make a skirt that really fits me in a supportive friendly group. Fun and informative with plenty of hints and tips on sewing generally thrown in.” Jenny

If you want to have a go at drafting patterns perfect for you, I’m teaching a pattern cutting summer school in August this year. You can find all the details in this post.

If you can’t commit yourself to a whole week of it, I will be running this workshop and other pattern cutting workshops between July and December this year.  If you’d like to be one of the first to hear about new classes and get priority booking before they are advertised online, sign-up to my newsletter here.

Recent Pattern Cutting Workshops

Yesterday I spent the day showing four eager students the delights of pattern cutting at the Beginner’s Pattern Cutting Workshop.

They started the day with just a piece of fabric and a blank piece of paper.  Five hours later they were all amazed (I’m always amazed that my students are amazed!) to have created a basic skirt block, made a toile that fitted perfectly and learnt enough to be able to turn their basic skirts into either a pencil skirt or an a-line skirt.

One of the main things my pattern cutting students seem to leave with is the delight of having a garment that fits them perfectly.  I guess if you’ve always tried to make yourself fit shop bought clothes and wrestled with fiddly pattern adjustments when working with dressmaking patterns, a garment that fits your body perfectly must be a bit of a revelation.

Here’s what they thought of the day in their own words:

Yet another great day learning to sew…..again.  Finally I can wear something that fits!”  Deb

So lovely to have a pattern that truly fits ME!!  Great workshop covering everything from pattern through to stitching the skirt together.”  Mary

A wonderful day I understood everything that Wendy said and I was very pleased with the end result.  I’ve started with the skirt block and I will be coming back to do the dress block!”  Georgia

Brilliant day, only 4 in the group so really had time with Wendy to learn.  Would love to come back for the dress course!”  Claire

And speaking of the dress pattern cutting workshop, here’s what some recent students thought of that one!

An informative, fast paced and fun day. And I got a made-to-measure dress toile and pattern, drafted by me (under the watchful eye of Wendy), to my personal measurements. What a great way to spend a day.”  Cathy

I attended the dress block pattern course and it was excellent, very informative and very productive (especially for a Sunday!), I cant believe after one days work I now have a dress pattern which I can make again and again and for it to fit perfectly every time. And if I ever do loose that stone I planned on loosing in January, I’m confident that I can now redraft the block on my own with all the handouts provided. I had a really good time and I’ve already brought some fabric to make my first proper dress from the pattern! Thanks Wendy”  Sarah

If you’d like to have a go at pattern cutting I’ll be doing more Sunday workshops after Christmas and more City & Guilds courses.  To get priority booking for workshops which will be announced in the next few weeks get yourself on my mailing list!  Email me on miyworkshop[at]gmail.com to be added.

Dress Pattern Cutting Workshop

On Sunday I had a lovely bunch of students for my Pattern Cutting for Dresses workshop.  I worked them extremely hard and they all made a perfectly fitting dress toile.  They went off able to make a sleeve, manipulate the darts and make a sleeveless version of the dress.  Unusually I didn’t have my camera, but the students did leave me with some great feedback:

“A busy day, which flew by.  An amazing class for someone who wants to make clothes that actually fit properly.  Wendy explained everything clearly and patiently and gave individual attention over points that needed clarification.  Very highly recommended!”  Barbara

“Really enjoyed it, learnt far more than I thought I would, very friendly and open to all questions – never felt stupid!”  Sophie

“Had a wonderful instructive day and learnt so much.  I now have a dress toile that fits me!”  Jackie

“Really great class.  Learnt so much and left with lots we can make.  Wendy was very patient and explained everything very well.  Will be coming back again ASAP!”  Sylvie

The next date for this workshop in October is already fully booked, but I will be doing more pattern cutting courses and one day workshops later this year and early next year.  If you’d like to be able to book onto a class before it’s advertised you can be included on my student mailing list, just email me at:

Two new Sunday workshop dates

See here for full details.

Pattern Cutting Workshop – the end result

Sunday saw another successful Pattern Cutting workshop – a day to have a dabble in the world of pattern cutting and leave with a pattern for a skirt made to your own measurements.

A lovely bunch of students worked really hard and produced 4 perfect toiles:

Here’s some of their thoughts on the day:

“Amazing what you can learn in a day!”

“Really enjoyed myself.  Wendy was so knowledgeable and easy going.”

What did you enjoy most about the day?

“Have a finished product to take home and learning lots of new skills.”

“To have a complete product at the end having started from scratch and it fits!”

Keep an eye on my list of Sunday workshops for the next Pattern Cutting workshop.  I also regularly run weekly pattern cutting courses.  The next one starts in October but is fully booked.  There will be more, email me at miyworkshop[at]gmail.com to be added to my mailing list so that you’re first to hear about new dates.
