Who are sewing classes for?

Whether you’re a complete sewing novice; have got as far as buying a sewing machine that’s now gathering dust in a cupboard; or are a more experienced sewer in need of a bit of help with a new project, a few classes can help set you off in the right direction and boost your confidence.  Come along and make clothes, accessories, do your own alterations, or whatever takes your fancy!

What can I make at sewing classes?

Bring along your own pattern, a favourite garment to copy or learn how to do your own alterations.

All MIY Collection sewing patterns and all patterns from Wendy’s bestselling book “The Beginner’s Guide to Dressmaking” are also available for students to use in classes at no extra cost.

You can make clothes for yourself and your family, accessories such as bags and purses or cushions, curtains and other home furnishings.

How much do the sewing classes cost? How many do I have to book?

These classes can be booked in blocks of 4 or 10, or paid per class, giving you the freedom to come to as many or as few as you feel you need.

A Perfect Pyjama Making Sunday

I know, I’ve been very bad at not uploading write-ups of classes over the last few months. There’s been lots going on what with books, magazines and new patterns! I will post some write-ups of previous classes, but in the meantime, here’s what we did today at MIY Workshop.

On a grey, wet, chilly Sunday what could be better than spending a day making cosy pyjama trousers?!

pyjama making class

Five students worked super hard and finished 5 1/2 pairs of pyjama trousers by the end of the day!

I could only persuade 3 of said students in front of the camera (well they are in their pj’s!) but you can see from these 3 what a great job they did.  For 2 of these students these were the first garments they’ve ever made!

I think a lot of people around the Brighton area are going to be getting pj’s for Christmas……

Here’s what today’s students thought of the class in their own words:

“A great day. It’s been creative and fun. Wendy is an excellent teacher and guided me through the difficult parts. I’m delighted with my pyjama trousers. Thank you!” Hilary

“My second workshop with Wendy and it was brilliant! Even when I made some mistakes Wendy knew how to still make it work! Can’t wait to do another class in the new year. Thank you.” Georgia

“Great day. I always felt that I could ask for help and was also comfortable to use my initiative and have a go on my own. The day went too fast!” Jo

“Very thorough, thank you so much for all your help!” Rebecca

“A thoroughly enjoyable day and much learnt! Look forward to the next one!!” Fiona

I will be repeating this class in the new year. If you’d like to have a go at making your own pyjama trousers sign up for the MIY Workshop newsletter here to get priority booking onto new classes before they’re opened up for booking online. Hope to see you at a class soon!

What a Brilliant Skirt Making Workshop!

Yesterday was a super productive and successful day at MIY Workshop.  I had five students for my Skirt Making workshop, who each turned up a little bit unsure, clutching bundles of lovely fabric that they were afraid of making a mess of.

Six hours of focussed hard work later, look what they produced!

Five perfectly fitting, finished skirts ready to wear home and to work the next day.  From left to right, Romy in a very autumnal skirt in a beautiful soft wool from Ditto, Alison’s skirt uses a lovely floral print on a lovely quality cotton/linen fabric from Ray Stitch, Kerry made a lovely Parisian print skirt, Claire went for polka dots which will look great for work and Taruka used a soft lightweight denim.  Three of these students have only just started sewing and these are the first garments they have made.  I think they will be the first of many…!

All five students seemed surprised by what they could achieve in a day and the standard of their finished skirts.  I don’t know why, what else did they expect?!

Here’s what they all thought of the day in their own words:

“I was really impressed with the skirt making course – Wendy is a great teacher and although I was nervous as a beginner when I arrived, by the end of the day I felt very proud with what I had achieved and had a lovely skirt to take home with me.  I would definitely recommend this course!”  Kerry

“A really fabulous day which re-ignited my love of dressmaking.  I love my skirt, thanks very much!”  Alison

“A really great day, I feel so much more confident to sew at home now and have overcome my fear of zips!”  Romy

“I have never sewn for myself and have learnt a lot of things.  I really enjoyed learning and would like to come back again, thank you!”  Teruka

“Thank you Wendy!  I’ve learnt some new skills and made a lovely new skirt – all in a day!  what a great way to spend a Sunday.  Looking forward to having a go at more on my own.”  Claire

More dates for this workshop will be coming in early 2014.  If you’d like to be able to advance book I can add you to my mailing list.  Just contact me (Wendy) on 01273 693451 or email miyworkshop[at]gmail.com

This skirt pattern will also soon be available to buy from MIY Collection.

Another successful Skirt Making Workshop

I had a lovely group of eager students on Sunday and one sadly stuck in London.

After a really focussed day of hard work………

……..and noises of surprise from the students when they saw how impressive their skirts were turning out, this is what we had:

Pretty impressive aren’t they?  None of these students had made anything from a pattern before, in fact one of them only learned how to use her sewing machine at one of my weekly sewing classes last week!

An a-line skirt really is a great first project for anyone new to sewing.  The shape looks good on almost everyone and it’s a quick garment to make which is easy to get to fit well.  These students are inspired to make more with their new found sewing, zip inserting and faced hemming skills!

Here’s what they thought of the day in their own words:

What did you enjoy most?

“Everything – Wendy is a great teacher.”

“Teacher not in a hurry and allowed me to go at my own speed. Feeling more confident using sewing machine.”

“Class size, learning the ‘proper’ way to put in zips, etc.”

Any other comments?

“Really recommend and a brilliant day out.”  And that from the student who had been given the workshop for her birthday!

Creations coming out of MIY Workshop

Here’s a small selection of the impressive creations currently coming out of MIY Workshop…

Clair has an eye for colour and pattern and chose a great combination for this frock she adapted from a Burda pattern.

Sonia in a gorgeous frock made from a Burda pattern and lovely cotton print fabric from Ditto.  Believe it or not this is the first garment Sonia has made.

Lisa’s brood in matching jersey frocks and t-shirt!

Impressed?  I am!

Skirt Making at MIY Workshop

It was a beautiful Spring day outside today and a hive of busy activity in MIY Workshop.

Heads down in busy concentration.  Just how I like my students!

This was the first Skirt Making Workshop of 2012 and what a bumper crop!

I love how, even given the same pattern, students can come up with such different garments through their choice of fabric, skirt shape, addition of lining and decorative stitching.

I think my students covered all the options here – from printed cotton summer skirts, to gorgeous tangerine cord lined with lime green, fabulous leopard print and very neatly topstitched denim.  What season or event wouldn’t be suited to one of these fantastic creations?!

Here’s what some of today’s students thought of the workshop:

“The whole day was great, new skills learnt, great teacher, new skirt ready for holiday in one class and lovely people!”

What did you enjoy most?

“The whole day.”

Well I can’t ask for much more than that can I.  Thanks for a lovely Sunday ladies.

MIY Workshop continues to take shape…

I finally got over “the fear” this week and got something in the window!  It had become like the first page of a sketchbook that you don’t want to “spoil” by working on, made worse by the fact that it’s there on the street for all to see.

So, I’ve started simple and fairly obvious – a changing example of student work  (Lisa’s skirt and top are on the mannequin first) and some examples of what you can do at MIY Workshop.  After all, the main point of the window is to let people know what’s going on inside!  Hopefully I’ll get braver and more experimental as time goes on as it is such a great window.

I’ve also made a start on prettifying the inside of the workshop and aim to have inspirational and useful samples and images on the walls.  A few of my appliqué and fabric manipulation samples got me started.

I’ll be in there later doing a bit more….
