Sewing Sale at MIY Workshop

After moving house and having a bit of a sort out at the workshop, I’ve got together a little pile of sewing related items that I no longer have room for.

They’re all second hand, but good quality items which I’ve listed below, some with prices.  The sale will be from 12pm to 3pm on Saturday 7th September at MIY Workshop.  Payment by cash only please.

Look forward to seeing some of you there!

janome525

A Janome Sewist 525S – the same machine we use in classes at MIY Workshop.  Speed adjustable foot pedal, a range of stitches suitable for sewing stretch fabrics, ability to drop the feed dog to do freehand machine embroidery and a presser foot pressure adjuster.  Great little machines and perfect for beginners.

This machine comes boxed but doesn’t have a hard cover and is also missing spare bobbins, a buttonhole foot and a manual.  The manual can be downloaded easily for free online, bobbins are very cheap to buy and a buttonhole foot can be picked up easily from any sewing shop or online for approx. £10.

PRICE: £95

janome521

A Janome Sewist 521 – the model before the one above.  It has a few less decorative stitches than the 525 and a 4-step buttonhole, rather than one-step.

Again, this machine comes boxed but doesn’t have a hard cover and is also missing spare bobbins and a manual.

PRICE: £95

Merry Christmas from Wendy and MIY Workshop

festivewindow

Christmas is almost here and you can sense the panic in the air!

If you’re stuck for last minute stocking fillers for creative “others” I have the last couple of “Fashionary” sketchbooks available at the workshop.

They’re A4 women’s versions and cost £20.  Here’s some pics:fashionary9Lovely Moleskin style cover with embossed “Fashionary”, ribbon page marker, elastic to keep closed and a pocket inside the back cover.

fashionary1Ideas for design page layouts and calendars for worldwide shows and fashion weeks……

fashionary6……size charts and glossaries for design terminology…….

fashionary5……and then lots of pages with feint croquis (templates of figures on which you can then quickly draw your designs) which disappear under your drawing and won’t show up on a photocopy.

Vital for all budding designers and the perfect bit of kit for anyone embarking on a pattern cutting course!

MIY Workshop tools are here!

Some of you are aware that for a while I’ve been developing some specialist tools for MIY Workshop.  At last they’re ready!

Here they are:

First up the MIY Workshop little sewing tool.  Made of cherry veneer wood with engraved markings you can use this handy little gadget to quickly and accurately mark 1cm / 1.5cm / 2.5cm  and 5cm seam and hem lines, mark the bias at 45˚, use the point to poke out nice pointy corners in your sewing and with the aid of 2 pencils use the drill holes to draw 2cm/4cm/6cm and 8cm diameter circles.

Next up:

The MIY Workshop pattern cutting and sewing ruler.  Made of smokey brown see through perspex with engraved markings this ruler is useful when sewing and pattern cutting.  The rulers running horizontally and vertically allow you to quickly add seam and hem allowances to your patterns up to 6cm, the horizontal ruler edge measures 30cm.  The ruler also has a 90˚ right angled corner and opposite a 45˚ edge.  There’s also a curved edge to help draw in smooth curves at sleeve heads and armholes.  And of course it has a handy hole for hanging it up out of the way in your workspace.

Both these tools are available to buy now at MIY Workshop and at my MIY Collection Etsy shop: http://www.etsy.com/shop/MIYcollection

Introductory prices:

MIY Workshop Little Sewing Tool – £8

MIY Workshop Pattern Cutting & Sewing Ruler – £16

Buy both as a set for £20.

How about a MIY Workshop gift voucher for Christmas?

Yes it’s that time of year again when we all start running around frantically spending money on things we’re not even sure people want.

Well maybe this could be the answer to your gift giving and Christmas list nightmares!

MIY Workshop gift vouchers are available in any amount and can be used in part or full payment for any class, workshop, one-to-one session, sewing machine hire session, membership, MIY Workshop tools (more on that later!) or MIY Collection sewing patterns.  They’re valid for a whole 6 months from date of purchase.

Ideal for yourself (drop some hints!) or that creative “other” that needs a Christmas present.

Get in touch with Wendy on 01273 693451 or 775951, call into MIY Workshop at 33 North Road, BN1 1YB or email her on post[at]wendyward.co.uk to buy yours.

MIY Collection Sewing Patterns

MIY Collection is now properly up and running.  There is a website http://miycollection.co.uk/ an online shop http://www.etsy.com/shop/MIYcollection and patterns are available at MIY Workshop.

There are currently 3 designs available (with plenty more in development!) and they’re all just £10 (plus P&P when bought online).

Here’s the 3 that are available now:

The Straight Neck Vest & Dress

A great pattern for beginners and easy to customise with the use of mix and match fabrics.  Lots of students at MIY Workshop have successfully used this pattern, here’s the latest, Malene with some very accurately matched stripes!

The Fold Over Waist Skirts

Two styles in one; an a-line skirt (a shape which seems to suit almost every body shape) and a more unusual asymmetric skirt, both with a super comfortable deep fold over waistband.

The Drapey Cardigan

Another popular one with MIY Workshop students, I currently have 3 students making this style!  Works equally well in heavier sweatshirt fabric for autumn/winter or simple jersey for a lightweight summer cardi.  It’s a lot easier than it looks!

Clothes Sale this weekend at MIY Workshop

The window is ready, I have taken in 6 pages worth of stock and I’ve got my eye on a few things….!

I think I’m almost ready for the sale this weekend.  Hope you are!

There are lots of pieces for under £10, lots for under £20, a wide range of sizes, clothes for every occasion, shoes, boots, bags, belts, jewellery.  The most expensive piece of clothing in there is £65.

Some highlights…….lovely wool coat from LK Bennett, Camper boots, Reiss frock, Toast jeans, Paul Costello jumper, loads of brand new things still with tags that had been hiding in wardrobes and some beautiful handmade vintage frocks.

You’d be silly to miss it.

A bit of Iceland in MIY Workshop

These distinctive coat hangers are by Icelandic designer Ingibjorg Hanna and I’m going to love using them to display student work and my own.

Why shouldn’t something functional and commonplace also be a pleasure to look at?!

The hangers will also be available to buy at MIY Workshop.

Handmade origami cards by Jenni Garvin at MIY Workshop

Photos Bip Mistry

These gorgeous cards are by Jenni Garvin and were custom made for me using a tatty old incomplete 1960′s sewing pattern.

They’re so nice, I wanted to keep them all for myself.  But that would be a bit silly, so they’re available in MIY Workshop for £3 each.  Each one is unique and when they’re gone, they’re gone.

Confession……I did sneak out one for myself..!

You can see more of Jenni’s cards here: http://jennigarvin.wordpress.com/
